I was lucky to be invited by The Malaysian Institute of
Road Safety Research (MIROS) on the 10th of January 2013 to witness their ASEAN
New Car Assessment Program (NCAP) Crash Test programme on a Perodua Myvi recently at its PC 3 Crash Test
facility in Tiang Dua, Ayer Molek,Melaka.
The event was attended by
many interested parties, including vehicle manufacturers (OEMs) &
visiting road safety officials.

This particular day’s crash
test which was the 7th New Car assessment program done by the
PC 3 laboratory - the first crash test lab in South East Asia headed by
Mr. Khairil Anwar Abu Kassim.

The specially built crash testing facility
The aim of the laboratory is to rate the safety performance and crash test viability of these cars which are sold in the Malaysian and South East Asian markets.
In order to provide better safety assessment of these cars, aspects such as Car Body protection to vehicle occupants, breach impact and other safety methodologies are tested and a star rating system provided to each car that undergoes the Crash test.
The aim of the test is to replicate the impact of a vehicle @ 40% offset position with a tolerance level of (+-1) with an accuracy level of within 20 mm of the barrier.
The Malaysian NCAP by MIROS is one of several crash test laboratories in the world and amongst the top 10 within the field.

Each Crash Test Dummy replicates 36 injury points in the Human body !
These cars and the Crash test dummies inside are impacted at a speed of 64km per hour against a specially prepared wall that has high speed recording cameras that allows sensitive measurements and data to be recorded that will provide the engineers with vital information on the impacted vehicle at the moment of impact.

A previous car that was purpose crashed to test the safety rating
It was an eye opening situation to visually feast your eyes on the point of impact of a vehicle travelling at this very slow speed (for me?) The damage that was received by the car was terrible and the outcome on it's crash test passengers even more horrible !
